ISN has a diverse multi-cultural community which gives students a wonderful opportunity to learn about each other’s language and cultures.  Most of our student body is comprised of students for which English is not their first language and their English proficiency varies depending upon each child's background.  For this reason, ISN offers a very specialized English as a Second Language (ESL) program with certified language teachers to support the particular needs of every student.

Those learners who need in-depth support participate in daily ESL classes.  Here they receive intensive small-group instruction and receive individual attention from an ESL specialist targeting their specific needs. The ESL specialists collaborate closely with mainstream teachers and can either provide “push-in” support in the classroom or they can provide “pull-out” support for students where necessary.

The ESL program at ISN is designed to help language learners acquire communicative and academic English skills required  to successfully access the grade level curriculum

Host Nation - Italian

The Host Nation program in Elementary School develops an appreciation and an understanding of Italian culture in a familiar environment. It is based on teacher-generated material from various resources, integrated with activities which aim at developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Teaching methodologies include daily oral participation, paired and small group activities, computer lab as well as  hands-on activities, stories, singing, drama, presentations, real life situations, projects, viewing of movies related  to coursework, and cultural enrichment from the local community. The program’s priority is to create a pleasant, safe, and learning environment where students’ motivation and personal interests are highlighted so as to achieve their highest potential.

Spanish

The Spanish program in High School is based on teacher generated material from various resources. The Spanish language program is based on the Instituto Cervantes system. At ISN we have three levels of Spanish corresponding to the QCER levels of the European Union: A1, A2, B1 / B2. Learning focuses on the four skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, oral expression and written expression. Our teaching methodologies are integrated with various activities which aim at developing speaking, oral project, stories, singing, translations, presentations and conversations. Furthermore, student engagement through Virtual Classroom games and exercises allows students to embrace the learning experience in a fun and motivating environment.

French

The French program is geared at teaching and instilling a passion for the French language. The main objective is to help each student attain proficiency in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in a way that makes language learning a meaningful activity.  The three year course spans from the beginner, to intermediate and advanced levels. By the end of the course, students will be able to express themselves and comfortably interact in a contemporary French speaking context.  Moreover, students will acquire knowledge of the French culture.
